Pizhou: This Unassuming Northern Jiangsu Gem Has Been Beautiful for Millennia, Yet Remains Largely Unknown

Pizhou, a county-level city under Xuzhou of Jiangsu, is often mispronounced as Peizhou; the correct reading is Pizhou.

A few lesser-known facts: Pizhou is China’s Ginkgo Capital—and also the country’s leading production base for wood panels, garlic and roasted nuts.

When it comes to ginkgo in the world, all eyes are on China; when it comes to ginkgo in China, all eyes are on Pizhou. With ten million trees, it puts on a breathtaking display of golden foliage every autumn.

The most enchanting sight lies in Yaozhuang Village of Tiefu Town, where a 3-kilometer country road transforms each late autumn into a “Ginkgo Time Tunnel.” Falling leaves blanket the ground in shimmering gold, creating a dreamlike “Golden Avenue.”

In 2014, a photograph titled Fairy Tale in Autumn, featuring this very “time tunnel,” was published in National Geographic, bringing Pizhou’s stunning autumn scenery to the world’s attention.
