Crabs and Chrysanthemums: Autumn in Xinghua

You may know Xinghua for its breathtaking waterborne canola flower fields in spring, but have you ever seen the dazzling chrysanthemums blooming across the raised-field landscapes in autumn? Climb the viewing tower and you’ll see patches of raised fields scattered like islands floating on water; take a boat through them and the scenery becomes a living scroll painting of Xinghua’s waterside countryside. From above, each raised field is unique in shape and size, surrounded entirely by water—distinct, colorful, and arranged like a natural maze of earth and waterways.

When the autumn breeze stirs, the crabs grow restless; when chrysanthemums bloom, the scent of fresh crabs follows. This is the season when Xinghua invites visitors to a harvest feast of golden chrysanthemums and plump hairy crabs. One in every eight hairy crabs sold nationwide comes from Xinghua. At the Anfeng National Crab Market, the daily trading volume now reaches one million kilograms, with daily transactions totaling around 100 million yuan. Blessed with abundant waterways and lush aquatic vegetation, Xinghua’s wetlands nurture crabs that are famously large, rich and sweet.

In Xinghua, rapeseed blossoms in spring and chrysanthemums in autumn—each season as vibrant as a Van Gogh canvas. A golden-season visit to savor crabs and admire chrysanthemums here is not just a culinary journey but a rare, elegant delight.
